Silver, Gold, and Platinum

Gleefully looting monsters and pillaging treasure hoards are the primary joys of adventuring life. But before you wade into that swimming pool of Gold coins, it might be worth understanding what everything is worth. And, um, how do I carry all this?

Otherworld, where all DnD Adventure Club encounters take place, has three major coins of the realm. Small pieces of Silver, Gold, and Platinum are forged in the smitheries of Haven, the distant capital city. Each metal piece is imprinted with a shield emblem and formed into a one-inch round coin. Gold is by far the most common coin, so if you’d prefer less math at your table you can run the game using only Gold.

  • 10 Silver pieces are worth 1 Gold piece.

  • Gold is the standard throughout the realm.

  • 10 Gold pieces are worth 1 Platinum piece.

Unless you play a very mechanically specific game, it’s perfectly fine to ignore encumbrance rules and let the players carry as much coin as they can write on their character sheets. But sometimes forcing your players to struggle with transporting a giant pile of treasure can be fun. In those instances, you can calculate about 50 coins to a pound.

Otherworld also has a very common gem standard. Gems are most often cut into 10 Gold piece facets. Converting your Gold and Silver into easy-to-carry gems can be done by most merchants.
