Roleplaying Charm
One challenging aspect of DnD is roleplaying a magical effect called Charm. Charm refers to a group of magical effects, most commonly encountered by our adventurers as a monster’s special ability or the first-level spell “Charm Person”.
The most important thing to know about Charm is that it is NOT mind control. The Charmed individual still has full control over their actions. They are merely inclined to treat the caster of the spell as a friend or a trusted ally. They will refuse to attack the charmer.
Encourage a Charmed player to act the part. Embracing role-playing, even when it is not in a player’s best interest, is a challenging but incredibly fun part of the game. If your player needs a little help embracing the spell’s effect, or attempts something that would actively contradict their Charm, you can have a player skip a turn at your discretion.
Charm ends when the spell duration is over, or the Charmed target is attacked by the charmer or their allies.
